A plain flat wall became the best spot in the house — a projecting bay window with a built-in seat board floods the living room with light, while crank-out casements alongside bring in easy, breeze-catching ventilation. Structurally supported and properly flashed, by our own crew.
From a flat, dim wall to a bright, projecting window nook.
The challenge
The living room had one flat picture window that let in light but no air and added no character — the room felt dim and boxy. The homeowners wanted more daylight, a sense of depth, real ventilation, and ideally a cozy spot to sit by the window, all without a major addition.
What we did
We removed the old flat unit and framed in a projecting vinyl bay window with proper structural support — a head board, cable support and an insulated seat board that creates a built-in nook with storage below. On either side we set Energy Star casements that crank out to catch a breeze and seal tight when closed. Everything is Low-E, argon-filled glass, fully flashed and insulated, and finished clean inside and out.
The result
A living room that feels bigger, brighter and more inviting — the bay projects out to pull in light from three sides and gives the family a built-in window seat, while the casements finally bring real airflow into the room. Energy-efficient, structurally sound and weather-tight, it reads like it was always meant to be there.
