Cedar sealed to a deep, rich tone with the grain glowing through, framed by crisp white railing.

Deck project · Newtown, PA

A cedar deck brought back from gray with a rich seal — warm grain, white railing and fresh stairs.

Real cedar with the grain and warmth composite can't fake — sanded, cleaned and sealed with a penetrating finish that pulls the wood from weathered gray back to a deep, rich tone. Crisp white railing, a refinished staircase and a coat built to shed Pennsylvania weather, by our own crew.

The project

From weathered gray cedar to deep, sealed warmth.

The challenge

The homeowners had real cedar — exactly the wood they wanted — but it had gone flat and gray, and the staircase down to the yard was dull and weathered with it. They didn't want to lose the natural wood and switch to composite; they wanted the grain and warmth brought back and protected so it would last.

What we did

We washed and sanded the cedar deck and stairs back to clean wood, then sealed everything with a penetrating, breathable finish in a rich tone that soaks into the grain rather than sitting on top — so it won't peel or flake the way film finishes do. The white railing was cleaned and brightened to frame the warm boards, and the staircase got the same treatment so the whole run reads as one finished piece.

The result

Cedar pulled all the way back from gray to a deep, glowing tone, with the grain showing through and the white railing crisp against it. The penetrating seal protects the wood and sheds water, on a simple refresh schedule, and the refinished staircase ties the deck cleanly down to the yard. Real wood, looking its best and built to stay that way.

What went into this deck.

Real cedar, sanded clean and protected with a breathable penetrating seal — natural wood warmth brought back and built to last.

01

Western red cedar

Naturally rot- and insect-resistant cedar with the warmth, grain and softness underfoot that only real wood gives.

02

Penetrating rich-tone seal

A breathable finish that soaks into the grain and holds a deep, warm tone — it won't peel or flake like a film finish, and refreshes on a simple schedule.

03

Sand & clean prep

The deck and stairs washed and sanded back to clean wood before sealing — the prep that makes the finish bite and last.

04

Brightened white railing

The white railing cleaned and brightened to frame the warm cedar with crisp, square balusters.

Cedar decks & deck sealing in Newtown & Lower Bucks County

Plenty of Newtown and Bucks County homeowners still want a real wood deck — and cedar delivers a warmth, grain and softness underfoot that composite just imitates. The trade-off is upkeep: left alone, cedar goes gray and flat. The fix isn't replacement, it's proper prep and a penetrating seal that pulls the wood back to a rich tone and protects it through the freeze-thaw seasons.

AVI Exteriors is based in Levittown and builds, stains and seals cedar and hardwood decks across Lower Bucks County and South Jersey — Newtown, Yardley, Washington Crossing, Richboro, New Hope and beyond. Every job is run by our own crews with careful, quality workmanship. If your cedar's gone gray, we'd be glad to take a look and give you an honest, fixed quote.

★★★★★
We didn't want to give up our cedar for composite — we just wanted it to look good again. AVI sanded it down and sealed it and the color is unreal, deep and warm, grain showing through. The stairs match perfectly now. Worth every penny.
